Is beauty in the eyes of the beholder?

TED collaborates with animator Andrew Park to illustrate Denis Dutton's provocative theory on beauty -- that art, music and other beautiful things, far from being simply "in the eye of the beholder," are a core part of human nature with deep evolutionary origins. Absoloutely phenomenal talk. I especially loved the statement 'We find beauty in anything done well'

Another example of such a presentation is the one below:

No canvas is too small!

Many artists have used pencils to create works of art – but Dalton Ghetti creates miniature masterpieces on the tips of pencils. Dalton, who works as a carpenter, has been making his tiny graphite works for about 25 years. A sculpture of Elvis Presley wearing shades, carved from a single pencil.

Dalton uses three basic tools to make his incredible creations – a razor blade, sewing needle and sculpting knife. He even refuses to use a magnifying glass and has never sold any of his work, only given it away to friends. See below for more of this awesomeness!

S-S-S-STOP Motion magic

Struggling with my Stop-motion animation assignment at school, and quite dejected after my first attempt got bombed, i came across these two videos. Inspired again!

Awesome stuff!

And the one below is a 'TARGET' commercial, inspired by the above Oren Lavie video.

the walking sketchbook

500x550

I wish I had heard about ‘The Sketchbook Project’ before. The freedom to go totally wild and directionless can actually spur up something very meaningful by the end of it. Okay, back to the project. Each ‘signed-up’ artist is sent the same blank Moleskine sketchbook.  They have it for a few months to play with it.

Sketchbook

They just have two rules: First, the book must be used in some way – You can’t send them back an empty book or a completely different book! Second, the sketchbook must stay within its original dimensions (because they don’t want to have to provide an extra suitcase just for your book while we’re touring the country).

The sketchbooks are turned in by the deadline (15th jan 2011). And then thousands of these sketchbooks are exhibited at galleries and museums as they make their way on tour across the country. After the tour, all sketchbooks will enter into the permanent collection of The Brooklyn Art Library, where they will be barcoded and available for the public to view.

Here are few examples of what people have done. Inspiring!
